Friday morning started early for the members of the King of Prussia Volunteer Fire Company. Around 6:00 A.M. they were alerted on the “highway response” with Swedeland Fire Company (sta. 48) for a Vehicle Accident with Entrapment on the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76 W/B). The subject that was reported trapped in their vehicle self-extricated before the arrival of the fire department. Squad 47 assisted Swedeland units on scene with hazard control before clearing shortly later.
After a few fire alarm activation responses and a Gas Odor Inside of a commercial business throughout the day the volunteers were alerted to the King of Prussia Plaza for a Building Fire. Station 47 (KPVFC), along with Quint 31 (Bridgeport #1), were on the initial response. Due to the amount of phone calls reporting smoke inside the mall the county dispatch center added the “confirmed procedure” response bringing Ladder 48, Rescue 49, Rescue 27 (fire fighter assist & search team) and Lafayette EMS to the incident. Engine 47-1, with 5 personnel and under the direction of Assistant Chief Keszczyk, arrived first and found a fire in a second floor public bathroom. As a hoseline was in the process of being stretched the crew made entry and extinguished the fire with a water can. Tower 47 with Lt. O’Donnell and his crew assisted the engine with searches, ventilation and checking for fire extension. KPVFC emptied apparatus from both firehouses totaling over 5 apparatus on scene. Incident Commander and Fire Chief Jenaway released units after the difficult task of ventilation was completed.
Not more than an hour after the KPVFC cleared the first Building Fire they returned to the King of Prussia Plaza again for another fire in a public bathroom. This time the fire generated less smoke and was handled quicker with less than what the initial incident required. The Upper Merion Township Fire Marshal and Upper Merion Township Police are investigating both incidents.
