Blood Drive Held in Memory of Local Firefighter and One-Year Old Girl
King Of Prussia, Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania

A blood drive is being held in memory of two local residents of the Montgomery County area, firefighter William C. "Bill" Daywalt and Katherine Bralski. The drive is being held at the King of Prussia firehouse located at 170 Allendale Rd. on April 14, 2007. If you can not attend this drive, but you would like to donate blood at another blood drive, please call 1-800-GIVE LIFE.

Bill was sick in a hospital bed in his living room when the fire started. Bill was flown to Temple University Hospital with his wife and granddaughter Alex. The amount of blood that he received is unknown, but he was in need of blood products everyday. Bill had burns on approximately 95% of his body.

"Bill would be proud that we are collecting blood and helping people to live in his memory. Bill was an individual who gave of himself to his community and his family," said Mrs. Daywalt. "He loved what he did and firefighting was his passion, it was in his blood. He remained an important part of the firehouse, even when he was not able to physically fight fires. Bill was a mentor and a teacher to many. He was a caring, giving man who put everyone else's needs before his, even his last act was an unselfish act to save his family and keep them from harm."

The American Red Cross Penn-Jersey Region serves patients in more than 100 New Jersey and Pennsylvania hospitals. Every 48 hours, these hospitals request more than 2,000 blood products to serve their patients. One blood donation may save up to three lives.

The blood drive is also being held in memory of Katie Bralski. Katie was born 18 weeks too soon, at 1lb. 17oz, and just about 15 inches. She was very tiny. Katie passed away twelve days after she was born and is sadly missed.

"On April 14, 2007, exactly 1 year and 23 days after Katie was born, my family will be celebrating Katie's birthday by giving life to others at the blood drive," said Tana Bralski.

Most healthy people who are at least 17 years ola and weigh 110 lbs. or more are eligible to donate every 56 days. Donors can give blood at any one of nearly 200 bloodmobiles sponsored by business and community groups in southeastern Pennsylvania and in New Jersey weekly, or at one of nine community donor centers. To make an immediate appointment for an American Red Cross blood drive this week, please call 1-800-GIVE LIFE (1-800-448-3543), or visit www.pleasegiveblood.org to find a listing of community blood drives.
